TEACHING ARTIST & EDUCATOR
For writers of all ages & backgrounds: writing and performance workshops, school residencies and teacher trainings.
Logan Phillips sparks a love for words in youth, teaches teenagers to rock microphones and helps experienced writers deepen their practice.
Having been a classroom teacher at both the elementary and university levels, as well as working comfortably in English and Spanish, Phillips brings a versatility and passion hard to find elsewhere.
An engaging speaker, Phillips' bilingual, intricate poems and dynamic performance spark an interest in crowds of all ages. His performances also offer insight on the writing process and his own history discovering the power of self-expression. Later, with smaller groups, Phillips teaches curriculum meant to help writers break through silence and understand poetry as a tool to create community.
A full-time, professional poet, he is regularly invited for residencies at schools across the United States and has taught in Mexico, Colombia and the UK.
“Logan Phillips came to our school and worked with our students using the medium of performance poetry, or to use the more popular term, slam poetry. I confess I knew nothing about slam poetry or slam poets. I certainly did not understand the power of the genre to generate so much interest in poetry. Over the space of a few short days Logan Phillips entertained, informed and inspired, which I’m sure you’ll agree is an impressive trifecta.
Writing has been called, by education researcher Doug Reeves, “thinking through the end of a pen”. The economy of expression that poetry demands makes it as rewarding as it is challenging. As a general rule students resist the efforts of their teachers get them to think. Logan Phillips, through the discipline of slam poetry, engaged students’ attention and with that engagement came great attention to thinking. I would make an educated guess that the impact on students’ literacy development as a result of this experience was disproportionately powerful compared to the time expended. I would further surmise that the impact of the experience would be long lived.
The population of Glenwood Springs High School has close to an equal split between the Hispanic and Anglo populations. Logan’s facility in both cultures made him a perfect individual to operate in our school. The event made an excellent contribution to the culture of the school and brought both communities closer together. ”
